The SPAT program is a community-based shellfish
restoration initiative that was started in 2000 and has a current
membership of 180 families from the Long Island area. SPAT members help in
all aspects of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program,s
shellfish enhancement efforts as well as learning how to tend their own
private shellfish gardens. In the past five years, SPAT has built many
things, but its biggest success is the building of community togetherness
and awareness regarding the marine environment. The key to the SPAT
program is simple; practice environmental stewardship, continue to learn
about the natural world, have fun and work as a team to make the planet a
better place for our children.
